Who ever thought that the word "NO" would help save your life?
Today, one of my girls Carrie P and I went to the Overland Park Convention Center to participate in "Ali's Runway", Prom Show & Self-Defense Training. "Ali's Runway" was put on by TAKE (The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation). For those of you who don't know, Alexandra (Ali) Kemp was a 19 y/o girl who was murdered at a pool she was lifeguarding at in Johnson County, Kansas. Her murder sparked a fire in the community, and more importantly in her family. Her father made something really dark into something really positive: showing all women out there how to fight like a girl!
The fashion show was pretty neat, everyday girls (and guys) modeling in Alfred Angelo prom and formal wear. Two girls from my school, Monica K and Nicole G were actually models in the show, so it was a pretty cool and surprising thing to see them. I saw two dresses that I will definitely be looking up on the Alfred Angelo site for prom.
After the fashion show, we filed into the TAKE defense training room. Jill and Bob Leiker both taught the defense training room, and for the first time, I can honestly say that i'm not afraid to go out of my house at night or walk from work to the parking lot at night. I didn't know this, but 90% of assults can be stopped in their tracks by good verbal boundaries alone...I knew my big mouth would come in handy for something! If anyone has anything like this going on in their community, I would suggest that you jump on it--its a really positive and good thing for all the girlis out there. I'm actually looking for a real self-defense course in my area (so if anyone knows of any, do tell/share), because not only would it be a good workout for my girls and I, it would be a great bonding experience and something quite educational.

It has been way too long. WAY TOO LONG!
A lot is new, in January I went to a bridal show (pictures later) with Ruthie Fenger from my school to represent David's Bridal. I did the clerical work (logging the bridal appointments and such..) as usual. ...I don't like to hustle people into making appointments, so I had a lot of fun. I saw Pat from alterations at the Independence store, so that was a pleasant and wonderful surprise!

At the beginning of February I was FINALLY moved back to my home (alterations) at work which is great except the revenue is still really low, so I work once a week for about 4 hours. Its good for my school work but bad for my wallet!
Also, I have decided and registered to shave my head for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. For those of you who don't know about St. Baldricks, it is an organization that helps gather funds for cancer research and such. The story goes that a few wealthy business men realized that nothing bad had every happened to them, so they decided to come up with a bet: whoever raised more money than the other had to shave their head. Its so funny that this thing started out in a tiny bar with a couple guys making bets and now its a national thing (still done in bars)! I was going to cut my hair before going to college anyway, so I though, "Hm. Why not?". My mom isn't exactly happy about it, but my sister is seemingly supportive about it (I don't think that she thinks i'll actually do it). I just think that St. Baldricks is such a great organization and everyone wants to see someone have their head when its long (or thick, long and kinky like mine), so i'm really excited. My goal is to raise $300 dollars and my afro will actually be dedicated to Lora Ackerman, a teacher at my school that was diagnosed with breast cancer.
St. Baldricks is March 3rd, 2007 so anyone who wants to donate, participate (shavee or barber) you can either contact me or visit the St.Baldricks site which is linked above.

Moving on, I will be selling various knits and fibers projects on Etsy, so if anyone is interested in purchasing something, 15% of the proceeds will be donated to St. Baldricks until March 3rd, 2007 or Relay for Life until further notice. For a little more information, check out my myspace!

Errand and homework day...

Well ya'll, I finally got my nails did, HOWEVER they are TOO TOO long.

I have a serious issue when it comes to saying what I do and don't want at nail salons because I feel like they've had to take so much time just for me, you know? Putting on that lil mask and those little nail torture drills and such--it would wear me out! Anyway, I went to work yesterday and realize that they are just too long. I have to get them trimmed, so i'm going to be a big girl and go get them filed down....

I WOULD show you a picture of my gorgeous nail color but blogger doesn't like me today and won't load the pic.

Oh Blogger, i'm annoyed.

Anyway, i'm over it, here are some pics of the fibers samples i've been doing in class:

So this is the whole thing so far--I have a couple more sample weavings to do.

Tabby and over two under two--i'm sure there are more in depth names for these two, but I haven't figured them out yet....

Dovetail and diagonal dovetail

Straight and diagonal--it was hard to get it to look goo because I used really thin yarn...
White/brown is beading, but I used a textured yarn and a regular yarn so you can't tell--ERGH! But, i'm learnin.

Figure 8, doesn't look so hot on camera.

Anyway, i'm a beginner, so give me some time and i'll come up with GREAT pieces....

Helloooo!

You are currently reading the first blogspot for moi! You may be wondering who I am, and this about sums it up:
I know this is scary, but its real people--REAL!!

Now, you may be asking yourself the purpose of this blog (don't worry, no more scary pictures), and I can't really answer that. I hope that it will be a medium for me to showcase and express my designs and creations-- but, only time will tell how successful this thing is!
